Drawing from the context of states, a Constitution contains the different set of rules and principles which the citizens of a country must follow to maintain order among the inhabitants and members of the group. Also, constitutions exist as a proof of the government’s role to protect the rights of all the citizens, and the government’s limitation with regards to the deprivation of citizen’s rights without due process of law. (Mbete, 2015)
The Far Eastern University as an academic institution which is composed of different student organizations governing the student body serves as a fit example in terms of applying and incorporating the Constitution’s role into a more specific institution. These student organizations are expected to promote order by means of formulating and enforcing different set of rules to which the students render habitual obedience to, in order to avoid the chaotic scene of an institution not having guidelines to follow.
Far Eastern University Central Student Organization serves as the head of all the student organizations within the Far Eastern University. At present, FEUCSO has effective rules which serves as guidelines within the mother organization. However, a Constitution which governs the relationship between FEUCSO and the student organizations under it, together with the student body, is not yet existing. The student organizations may be similar in structure but they are different in terms of purpose and end goals as they try to cater the needs and wants of the students under them. With this, the FEUCSO strongly believes that by having a “One FEU Constitution”, a more harmonious relationship between the mother organization and the organizations it governs will flourish. The Constitution will give the student organizations appropriate, elaborate, and effective standards to follow that will in turn be beneficial to the student body. By creating a Constitution of this character, the students will be served with a more student driven and student oriented type of service.
The FEU Central Student Organization would like to gain the authority and power to create the Constitutional Convention which will draft the different rules that will be written down in the Constitution discussed above. The Constitution will be constituted of different laws, focusing on the different requirements that a student organization should have in order for it not to be dissolved. This will also touch different laws focusing on the officials of the different organizations, specifying their duties and their limitations as well. This will also be the key for the formulation of new organizations which will be responsible for important procedures such as Elections and Auditing among student organizations.
Given this context, a Constitution that will govern over the student organizations, which in turn govern over the students, is needed to maintain the order with regards to the student organization’s achieving order in terms of interaction despite their diverse nature, goals, and platforms. This Constitution will help the organizations operate more effectively by specifying the structure, purpose and the limitations they have. This Constitution will be very specific and not only delegate the laws for the organization as a whole but it will also touch the different factors that make them up. For example, other academic institutions like the Holy Angel University and De Lasalle University have also seen this need and the FEU Central Student Organization believes that it is time for the university to have its own “One FEU constitution”.
